After reading Une soupe au caillou (Stone Soup), the children in Mlle Themelis’ and Mlle Viens class went on a walking excursion to the local farmer’s market to purchase vegetables to make their very own vegetable soup.
It was a beautiful autumn day and the children
thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They had the opportunity to see all sorts of
autumn vegetables – including purple cauliflower and blue potatoes! Some even
asked the farmer’s some great questions. The vegetables we bought included:
purple cauliflower, broccoli, onions, green peppers, potatoes (blue ones too),
sweet potatoes, carrots, rutabaga, and mushrooms.
The following day, the class
came up with a recipe, including an ingredient list and the steps. The children
washed the vegetables and chopped them and added them all to the pot. After
some time playing outside, the soup was ready. Most of the children really
enjoyed it! After school, one child told his mother he wanted to go to the
grocery store to buy vegetables to make it again at home!
