School Pools Update from Sheila Carey-Meagher, Trustee for Beaches-East Y

Here is the latest on pools in our ward…

The Budget committee at City Hall today voted in favour of GA Brown and Duke of Connaught pools remaining opened for Parks and Rec programmes for the following year. The decision goes to Council for a vote next week.

Okay that battle is nearly over and is at least headed in the right direction.

The Board is holding back on the signing of an agreement with the City to fund the pools that are jointly used by both of us. There was a motion in June to close all pools – remember that we do not get provincial funding for pools at all – if the City didn’t come up with enough money to pay for all the pools all of the time.

We are in the middle of the budget process and so it is not unusual to be playing around with different scenarios. We all need to point our collective minds at the Board – the Chair and all the Trustees – to rethink the need for pools as an instructional programme and not a frill.

This is an interim response to you all who have emailed me and there will be more information coming as things unfold.

In the mean time there is a huge pool party at GA Brown on Saturday, March 1 from 1:30 hosted by Janet Davis and me. Please come and participate and make a statement of support.

Thanks and keep the pressure up…

S.

Action needed to Save School Pools!

February 25th and March 5th are two key dates in the struggle to save up to 78 school pools.

Our pools were provided by our taxes. We must once again convince the various levels of government (whose funding all come from our taxes) that we will not let them take this valuable community resource away. Here’s what to do:

Before Feb 25th

Tell the Toronto District School Board to work with the City and Province to keep our local pools open.
Send your comments to our school trustee, Sheila Cary-Meagher:
sheila.cary-meagher@tdsb.on.ca
Copy: TDSB Chair, John Campbell: john.campbell@tdsb.on.ca
Operations and Facilities Committee Chair, Mari Rutka: mari.rutka@tdsb.on.ca
City of Toronto Budget committee: clerk@toronto.ca
City Councillor, Beaches-East York, Ward 31, Janet Davis: councillor_davis@toronto.ca

Before March 5th

Tell Education Minister Kathleen Wynne that our pools are a vital part of the school and community, and deserve her support: minister.edu@ontario.ca
Copy councillor_davis@toronto.ca & local MPP for East York,
Michael Prue: mprue-qp@ndp.on.ca

Ask for support from your city councillor: www.toronto.ca/councilors

My School Review: Thursday March 6th in the school lunchroom

Thanks to all the parents who came out to the My School Review (MSR) meeting on Thursday, February 7th. There was a wonderful energy in the room, and many great ideas will, no doubt, make a final wish list, helping take Earl Beatty in new directions. There was lots of raucous talk about the necessity for parent involvement, mindfulness toward environmental and global thinking, along with awareness and involvement in our very own neighbourhood. From making school life more fun, inclusive and welcoming to all, to reaching out to those who can support us and be supported by us, there was no topic ('cept whining) off the agenda.

There is one more scheduled opportunity to participate in the My School Review process. Come out and let us know what you'd like to see at the Earl Beatty of the future, Thursday March 6th in the school lunchroom. LUG A MUG (in an effort to "green" the coffee, tea and snacks table), and feel free to bring your children as child care will be available.
