The Fun Fair needs a new Committee

Dear Parents, for the past several weeks notes have been coming home in the Thursday folder about the need for a new Fun Fair Committee. Earl Beatty's Fun Fair is the largest fundraiser of the year and needs enthusiastic and creative parents to organize it.

Past Fun Fairs have raised money to fund the following major items: computer lab furniture, audio-visual equipment, curtains for the gym stage, curriculum enhancement programs, and a smartboard.

The Fair takes place at the end of May and the planning of it should start in January to make sure everything runs smoothly.

The old Committee is happy to help with the handover and has all the information needed to plan the Fair.

If you're interested in being part of the new Fun Fair Committee please contact: Tina Lehtola, tinaslehtolaAThotmailDOT.com.

Earl Beatty Receives $4000 in funding!

The Earl Beatty Greening Team and Eco Committee is pleased to announce that our school has received funding from the City of Toronto Clean and Beautiful City Fund for our current and future greening projects around the school. Our application was sent in to Clean and Beautiful via Councillor Janet Davis' office, who passed on the good news of our success at the end of November.

The plan is to use part of the funds for our current - The Native Garden and Learning Circle - and for future projects, which will be decided through inputs from students and staff.

How much beautiful and clean, you ask? $4000!! Thanks to the City of Toronto's Clean and Beautiful Fund and to our dedicated team of Green volunteers who submitted the application. One more step in making Earl Beatty a beautiful place to be!

Make a difference - join the new Fun Fair Committee!

Dear Parents,

Your creative ideas and enthusiasm are needed to form a new Fun Fair Committee for this school year! The Fun Fair, held in May, is 5 years old but is in need of a new group of parents to organize it.

If you'd like to make a difference at your child's school please consider being on the Committee. It's a great way to meet people and work with them towards a common goal, that being organizing the largest fundraiser of the year for Earl Beatty.

The old Committee is committed to helping with the handover and has all the Fair information in an easy to use binder (processes, contact information, volunteers, sponsors, donors, and much more).

If you're interested in being part of the new Fun Fair Committee please contact:

Earl Beatty needs your QSP paper order subscriptions in by Tues Oct 27th!

Keep those final paper orders for QSP subscriptions coming! There are a few final orders coming into the website as well. There's only a limited time left for subscriptions to count towards your prizes, so gently remind anyone who asked for an order form but hasn't sent one back yet.

Please make a special effort to have all orders in by the end of Tuesday! Yes, that is tomorrow!

Remember that orders can be placed any time of year at http://www.QSP.ca and that those orders will always benefit your school. Our school number is 9156.

We've made some great progress toward our goal. Earl Beatty is almost at $10,000 in subscriptions! Get those final orders in and let's see how high we get!

Note to Earl Beatty parents re: Fun Fair Committee

Dear Parents,

This note is to advise Earl Beatty parents that the Fun Fair Committee is stepping down after 5 years.

We've had a great time organizing and running the Fair, and have had wonderful volunteers helping us, but with much thought we've decided to step aside and let a new enthusiastic group, with great ideas, take over and make it their own event.

To help the new committee we have put together a binder which includes all processes and contact information we've used over the past 5 years, e.g. donors, sponsors, volunteers, and much more.

We are also more than happy to help with any questions the new committee may have.

If you're interested in being part of the new Fun Fair Committee please contact: Tina Lehtola, tinaslehtolaAThotmailDOTcom

Thank you,

Friday June 5th - 10am to 4pm : Join the Earl Beatty Eco-team and the Greening Committee and plant the Learning Circle Garden

We've all waited a long time - first the plan, then the removal of the old hedge, then the creation of the bed, and most recently, the learning circle itself was added just a few weeks ago. Now it is time to plant the surrounding garden! Bring your gloves, bring a shovel and a watering can. Prepare to get dirty and get the trees and shrubs in the ground.

Follow-up Report from Janet Davis’ Environmental Day May 16th, 2009

It was an overcast and rainy day, but the Earl Beatty EcoTeam showed that a grey day couldn’t damper their spirits and enthusiasm. The team carried two huge boxes of discarded batteries and a small assortment of ink cartridges to be
properly recycled. Cameron Smith poured the batteries into the large bins. The Janet Davis Charitable BBQ made a deal with the EcoTeam: if they sold hot dogs and drinks during the day, they could keep the profits. The team raised a total of $517.10, a fantastic success! Congratulations and thanks to all the volunteers: Sian, Margery, Lisa, Sheila, Peter, Chris, Sam, Pam and Liza. Great work!

Honest Earl's Bargain Basement Sale and Cafe, Saturday, April 18th, 2009

The day began with bright sunshine and nervous volunteers wondering if people would come on such a beautiful day. And they did! Our first customer peaked in at 8:50am - a good ten minutes before we were slated to open. Perhaps it was our striking new signs posted along the street and the great banner hanging over the Wolverleigh doors. Even so, the sale was bustling by 10am, gently used clothing, the delicious organic, fair trade coffee (thanks again to Small World Cafe) and fabulous baked goods (thanks so much bakers!) practically flew out the door.

The Earl Beatty Greening Committee and a host of determined volunteers rang up sales to the tune of $1300.00! Fantastic! Unsold clothing went to a variety of venues, including Ages and Stages (where we can continue to make money with our account, #197), Massey House, Applewood community clothing exchange. The winter stuff is in storage for next fall. Hope to see you then.

Janet Davis's Environment Day May 16th - HELP!

Calling all Earl Beatty Greening Supporters - we need your help!

As you all may know, Councillor Janet Davis hosts a Community Environment Day each year to help our neighbourhood recycle items that can't go in our blue boxes, have a place to put reusable items and pick up great compost, among other things.

This year, it is on Saturday, May 16th, from 10am to 2pm at Stan Wadlow Park Clubhouse, 373 Cedarvale, east of Woodbine.

Why do we need your help? Janet Davis has offered the Greening Committee the proceeds from the BBQ that she hosts during that time. Each year the amount of money earned goes to a charitable or good cause, and she invited the Earl Beatty Greening Committee to participate and earn the $400 to $500 the BBQ makes for our front garden and learning circle.

What do you need to do? Come to the Environment Day and spend an hour or two (depending on the number of people we get) cooking up the hotdogs, and selling them and drinks. Whatever we make, we keep for the greening of the yard.

Please contact Liza at 416-425-5289 or email her at liza.ordubegian@gmail.com if you can spare some time. Pick up some free compost or purchase a water barrel while you are there!

Community Clean-Up, Saturday, April 25th from 1pm to 3pm

On behalf of the Eco Team Greening Committee,
you are invited to help clean up our school
grounds and surrounding community on
Saturday, April 25th, from 1 pm - 3 pm.

"I know we usually have it in the morning since 2003, but, I had to move it to the afternoon so that I could actually attend, as I have a course in the
morning. I promise, it will be back to normal next year. Who knows? Maybe we will like it better in the afternoon because it's warmer - I do recall on rainy days or cold days wearing gloves under our clean-up gloves!

Anyway, I wanted to remind you all that we will be covering the school
grounds and adjacent streets: Coxwell to Woodmount, Danforth to Milverton, providing we have enough people.

We will also be cleaning up the front gardens in preparation for the
planting season, so you can bring your rakes, cutters, green waste bags and the like to help out. The City has provided garbage bags and gloves.

I am planning to bring coffee fixings and drinks for the kids and possibly
some baked goods (or maybe Tim Horton donuts, we will have to see) for our
wonderful volunteers. If you have some spare time to bake, it would be
appreciated by all, I am sure. Remember, no nuts or peanuts, just in case.

I hope that we won't interfere too much with family activities, but I do
hope you all can join in this annual spring ritual.

Thanks in advance,

Liza
clean-up day organizer and clip board holder (for a lack of a better
description)"

THE EARL'S GREEN WALK 2009

WELCOME TO THE EARLS' GREEN WALK: a chance to explore the green side of the neighborhood around our local schools. The circular route passes through the ravine and East Lynn Park and is a great way to stretch your legs, take in some fresh air, and discover some great things our schools and neighbors are doing for the environment.

THE EARLS' GREEN WALK was created by Susan Gully as part of a joint project to unite Earl Haig, Earl Beatty, and Gledhill Public Schools in collaborative environmental projects within our neighborhood.

The walk is intended to be used around EARTH DAY 2009 at a time of your choice since every day is really EARTH DAY!

The route includes 25 stops that can be followed in its entirety or shortened to accommodate different age groups and schedules. The route is away from major vehicle traffic. A couple of clipboards for the map and the route description would be handy.

THE EARLS' GREEN WALK
  • is 3 km long
  • takes 4353 adult steps
  • burns 159 calories
  • takes 1.5 - 2 hrs including stops

THE EARLS' GREEN WALK IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE

  • Physical activity
  • Opportunities for students to learn spacially, aurally and visually
  • Opportunities for students and teachers to share leadership
  • Suggestions for enriched discussions/activities to follow the walk
  • An opportunity to practice "street ettiquette" when crossing streets and walking by people's homes
  • A meaningful and positive way to experience EARTH DAY/WEEK 2009

Detailed directions describing the route's 25 stops and a map of the route are available to download, save, and print out.

For The Earls' Green Walk route details click here.

Workshop: What Parents Need to Know About the Video Games Kids Play

You're invited to a Riverdale School Council Workshop:
April 7/09, 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Riverdale C.I. Auditorium
1094 Gerrard St. East

Gamer Ed:
What Parents need to know about the
Video Games Kids Play

The debate about the benefits and/or curse that is video games doesn’t seem to end. Are they educational or a mindless waste of time? Do they encourage strategic reasoning or destructive, violent behavior?

Underpinning this debate is an age-old truth; we fear what we don’t understand and many parents today don’t know, understand or get gaming. Why do kids have this passionate love affair with video games? How can they invest so much of themselves in blowing up zombies, decorating an igloo or slaying trolls? How do kids get their thumbs and brains to work in tandem when they can’t seem to find their way to the laundry basket?

As parents, many of us struggle with issues like appropriate game play, game systems and appropriate titles. Or maybe we’re not even part of the conversation and have allowed our kids to parent themselves through the video game landscape.
What is a parent’s role in managing the video-gaming habits of their kids?

Join us at Riverdale Collegiate for an INCREDIBLE night of gaming education

We’ll explain the range of gaming options, review gaming platforms and rating guides, provide parenting strategies, and PLAY SOME GAMES!

This is a fabulous opportunity for parents to educate themselves on an activity that is defining a generation of kids.

Featuring:
- Marc Saltzman: Gaming and Technology Guru, Host of ‘Plugged in with Marc Salzman’, ‘Tech Talk’ on CFRB - Jesse Wente: Gaming and Film Critic, CBC Radio, TIFF programmer ….and the gaming talents of Riverdale students

*** Admission is Free to all students, parents, guardians and TDSB staff.

Bowling at Danforth Bowl! Friday, March 20th, 2:30-4:30pm‏

Hey there!

It's the self-appointed Earl Beatty cruise director speaking... !
Last year I booked the Danforth Bowl on the Friday of the March Break, and it was so much fun for the families who came that I'm doing it again. We the place to ourselves for 2 hours (6 lanes), and it worked out to be about $20 per family (note: the exact amount depends on how many families sign up, and the number of kids per family). I recall that each child received a drink and chips as part of this cost, and the adults happily ordered from the wine/beer selection, and paid separately for this.

If you are interested, please reply to ebsacinfo@gmail.com asap (we had a full house sign up pretty quickly last year). Because I have to pay the Danforth Bowl for our time there, and there are so many kids involved, the sooner I know who is coming the better. Ask your friends at the school too if you like, because it's great for us to support our local bowling alley! If we get more kids wanting to come than can be accommodated, those who don't get on my list can always be organized into a second group from the school.

Cheers, Sheila

EcoTeam Greening Committee Meeting

Click here for the minutes of our planning meeting at Small World Cafe on February 21st.

We are thrilled to share the news that Earl Beatty has been granted $2000 from the Toyota / Evergreen Learning Grounds Fund in support of our plans for the school's front yard landscape improvements. Thanks to all of you who have supported the efforts of the EcoTeam Greening Committee by donating items as well as helping out or coming to shop at the Honest Earl's Bargain Basement sales. In addition to the numerous bags of clothes that we have collectively donated to local shelters and charities, we have raised an additional $270 from the clothing that was sold through Ages and Stages (our local children's clothing consignment store on the Danforth) - bringing the total raised for this project to $4760!

So dig out those gardening gloves and sun hats, because plans are underway for Earl Beatty's spring gardening events! And please remember to save your gently used kid's clothing, footwear and sporting equipment for donation to the spring...
Honest Earl's Bargain Basement Sale:
Date: Sat. April 18th, 2009, 9a.m. -1 p.m.

If you can't hold onto these items until then, Ages and Stages will accept items in season for resale (just mention the Earl Beatty Greening Fund). More news on the sale and planting /gardening events to come in future Thursday folders and school newletters. And did we mention the amazing baked goods and delicious coffee served at the sales (compliments of Small World Cafe)...? Yum... good friends and good food... with 'green' sales and bargains galore... really, what else could you ask for?!

Thanks again,
The Earl Beatty Ecoteam Greening Committee.

Earl Beatty Community Centre Advisory Council Annual Family Skate a Huge Success!

Well, we couldn't ask for a better day! The sun was shining, it wasn't too cold and nearly 150 people participated in the Earl Beatty Community Centre Advisory Council Annual Family Skate.

The Crazy Scarf contest had about a dozen particpants; it was so difficult to choose the craziest scarf, the most colourful scarf, the cutest scarf or the longest scarf. The winners received a re-usable mug, hot chocolate, gloves or a warm headband. Thanks to all that participated.

Everyone got to join in the fun with the Spot Skate, and the youngest of the crowd had their own Simon Says game. Lots of happy winners received skate guards, laces, pucks, or skate tighteners.

The highlight of the event probably was the huge selection of yummy baked goods - including fabulous muffins from our local Cafe - Small World. Thanks to Tony and Beth for donating the muffins and their lovely organic, fair trade coffee. The Advisory Council would also like to thank the many parents who baked nut-free goodies for all to share. Everyone enjoyed them. Thanks also to Ellen and Sian for their swift hot chocolate making.

The event couldn't go on without the help of Community Centre staff - thanks to Crystal and Jesse for the music and games.

Looking forward to next year,

Liza
