Four Flights to Horror!!

Earl Beatty Community Centre & Advisory Council invite you to:

THE 5TH ANNUAL FOUR FLIGHTS TO HORROR
Friday, October 26th, 2012
6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Earl Beatty Gym
Admission:      
$3.00    people 15 years and older
$2.00    people 14 years and younger
Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult.

Proceeds go towards the EBCC Advisory Council for recreation and pool programs.

Don't Forget: Donate a non-perishable food item for the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Grade 4 Fundraising

In grade 4, as part of the Social Studies curriculum, students study Medieval Times. This unit is being covered throughout the fall and culminating in a trip to Medieval Times to experience Medieval life "first-hand"! 
To help supplement the costs of this trip, the grade 4 students and teachers will be holding various fundraising events throughout October and November.
Next Monday they will be hosting a fun Halloween-themed event for the Kindergarten students. 
More fund-raising updates to follow as events are planned. 

TDSB launches consultations on the future needs of K-12 students

The Toronto District School Board has just launched a series of consultations to address future needs of TDSB students in Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Read the details below is this message quoted from the TDSB announcement email:

These consultations are an opportunity to contribute to the future of our students in our schools. The conversations will ensure our future plans are based on the programs that best support our students as we develop a plan to guide us into the future. Simply put, we need the right programs in the right spaces in the right places.

We know how important it is to have the right opportunities and supports in place to prepare students for the future as they transition from TDSB schools to future learning choices, careers and life as responsible, caring citizens in our democratic society.

Over the course of the next few weeks we will be consulting at SuperCouncil Meetings, Quad Dialogues, FOS Focus Groups, 4 City Wide Forums, Ward Councils as requested, FOS Meetings, TSAA Executive Meeting, Employee Group Executive Meetings, and Senior Team Council. Community members will also have the opportunity to participate online by filling out a survey or participating in a virtual consultation session. 

We want to begin by starting an open, inclusive dialogue around how we can bridge today’s education with the future needs of schools and learning. The dates and times for the city wide consultations are below. All meetings are from 7 – 9 pm.

Donations to Kindergarten Classrooms Welcome

Earl Beatty is accepting donations for gently used books and toys for its kindergarten classes. If you have any books or toys that would be appropriate for JK and SK students, please drop them off with your child's teacher (for kindergarten students) or at the office. Donations for other classrooms are also welcome.

Potential Closure of 54 Division

Future of 54 Division in Question

54 Division of the Toronto Police Service is slated for a new station in 2014.  However, Chief Bill Blair is examining closing or merging 54 Division with other divisions to reduce operating and capital costs. The $36 million allocation in the 10 year Police budget capital plan for the re-build of the station at 54 Division could be cut. Two consultations were held in East York to hear resident views. Overwhelmingly, attendees said 54 Division should not be closed, and the City should proceed with the new building. Chief Blair is expected to report on his findings in November. Also please come to the 54 Division, Community Police Liaison Committee Town Hall on Thursday October 25th, at 6:30 PM in the East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Avenue. 

Having our division close and possibly merge with surrounding divisions will mean a big loss to this community and division. There are the issues of the potential loss of community policing and potential wait times for response, and possible increase in crime.

News from the Earl Beatty Eco-Team

Thanks to students at Jackman School, a TDSB Platinum Eco School, Toronto residents can now recycle items such as:

• Clamshell containers (hinged, clear plastic containers used for food items such as berries and take-out)
• Clear fruit and vegetable containers
• Clear take-out food containers
• Moulded bakery item trays
• Plastic plates and glasses
• Egg cartons
• Cold beverage cups/lids
• Compact disk cases (empty)

Stay tuned for more information on the Earl Beatty Eco-Team throughout the school year. The student club will be run in March to May, and efforts will begin shortly to once again certify Earl Beatty as an Eco-School.

Junior Girls Slo-Pitch Team Wins the Championship!

A Big Congratulations goes out to Earl Beatty's Junior Girls Slo-Pitch team! 

After 3 weeks of practicing they were able to capture the Division 3 championship.  

The team travelled by TTC to Blythwood P.S., who hosted the tournament.

Earl Beatty's team won all their round robin games and went unbeaten by winning the championship game.

A Great Day at the Races!

Yesterday many Earl Beatty Students participated in TDSB's Track and Field day at the Beach.

Despite chilly temperature, the wind, and some rain it was a lot of fun. 

The Primaries ran 1.5 km, Juniors ran 2.0 km, and Seniors 3.0 km!

Some of the notable competitors were:

Tessa H in Grade 1 who was the first Earl Beatty runner to finish in the top 40.  

In grade 2, Maya B finished in the top 30.  

In grade 4 Aidan O , Alicja O, and Maddie B all finished in the top 30.

Spencer L and Andrew B finished in the top 60 from grade 5

The entire grade 8 class and Marianne's entire Grade 6 class participated and everybody finished the race!

Deanna R, Rachel S, and Thalia D all finished in the top 20 for Grade 8 girls.  

Congratulations to all who participated and did their best! And a big thank you to Earl Beatty teachers and parent volunteers who made this happen.

Terry Fox Walk of Hope

In September the Earl Beatty community raised $1,357 to support the Terry Fox Walk of Hope.
This is an outstanding effort and was $557 over the original goal—and well over last year's fund raising achievements.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this possible!

Earl Beatty School Advisory Council Makes a Difference!

DID YOU KNOW?

The Earl Beatty School Advisory Council has disbursed over $60,000 in the last five years to support a variety of needs, including:

• furniture (computer lab, lunch room)
• equipment (audio-visual, computers, smart boards, MOBIs)
• front yard greening and outdoor learning circle
• stage curtains (with the community centre)
• musical instruments
• classroom support (supplies, fans)
• drama presentations
• curriculum enhancement programs (artists, scientist in schools, levelled readers, etc.)
• sport supplies (shirts, pinnies, equipment for the gym and recess)
• event support (e.g. graduation)
• extra-curricular clubs support
• volunteer support (e.g. police checks)

Attend the Earl Beatty School Advisory Council (SAC) meetings, second Thursday of each month, and become part of the team that helps make our school a “beautiful place to be.”
