Stopping Hunger in Our Community

Earl Beatty students and staff did a fantastic job collecting non-perishable food for the “We Scare Hunger” Campaign in support of Free the Children's initiative to stop local hunger. The Daily Food Bank came to our school and collected 904 cans of food!

As a way to show appreciation for school’s efforts in helping their community, the Me to We Club is going to have a Community Spirit Day on Friday, December 13th.

Students and staff are asked to wear their Earl Beatty t-shirt or a t-shirt with images of Canadian symbols/words on it. We look forward to seeing everyone on Community Spirit Day!

Great Job Earl Beatty!

Making Soup

Last month Mrs. Wren's grade 2 class took a trip to the market to buy vegetables. They then got busy chopping, measuring, and adding all the ingredients to the pot!

Delicious soup resulted and everyone got to have a taste.

Not only was this a great exercise in healthy eating, but students also learned how to record the steps in creating soup!

World Diabetes Day

November 14 is World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day is an annual UN-sponsored day to direct focus on diabetes-related issues and the enormous global health crisis it represents.

November 14 was chosen as the date for World Diabetes Day because it was the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, one of the co-discoverers of insulin and a Nobel prize-winning Canadian.

The blue circle was chosen as the symbol: blue for the UN flag, and the circle to represent life, health, and unity.

Around the world people will be wearing blue, and there will be lots of activities to mark the day. Many major monuments around the world will be lit up in blue tomorrow night, including the CN Tower.

Learn the basic facts about diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes affects mostly children and adolescents. Type 1 (used to be called juvenile diabetes) is an autoimmune disease. It is not caused by eating too much sugar and is not preventable. Type 1 diabetes is quite different from type 2 diabetes, which tends to develop later in life. About 90% of people with diabetes have type 2; only about 10% have type 1.

Consider wearing blue today to support all the people around the world who work hard to make life better for people with diabetes!

Learning About Beetles

Mrs. David and Ms. Blakely’s JK/SK students have been doing an inquiry about mealworms and how they change into beetles. The inquiry began when Ms. Blakely brought in a larva for our students. We put it into an empty container and before the students knew it, the larva hatched into a beetle!

The students were surprised that the beetle spent so much time on his back, even though he was alive!

There was much excitement within the classroom and many of our students became little scientists who recorded what they saw, what they thought and what they were still wondering.

We spoke about the life cycle of a beetle and left some books about insects at the Science Centre for the students.

A Trip to the Market!

After reading Une soupe au caillou (Stone Soup), the children in Mlle Themelis’ and Mlle Viens class went on a walking excursion to the local farmer’s market to purchase vegetables to make their very own vegetable soup.

It was a beautiful autumn day and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They had the opportunity to see all sorts of autumn vegetables – including purple cauliflower and blue potatoes! Some even asked the farmer’s some great questions. The vegetables we bought included: purple cauliflower, broccoli, onions, green peppers, potatoes (blue ones too), sweet potatoes, carrots, rutabaga, and mushrooms.

The following day, the class came up with a recipe, including an ingredient list and the steps. The children washed the vegetables and chopped them and added them all to the pot. After some time playing outside, the soup was ready. Most of the children really enjoyed it! After school, one child told his mother he wanted to go to the grocery store to buy vegetables to make it again at home!
