Fundraing Plans for 2014/15 - Be Part of the Conversation

For anyone interested in discussing EBSAC fundraising plans for the 2014-15 school year, please meet at Sarah's (cafe/bar, NE corner of Danforth and Monarch Park) on Monday June 9 at 8 PM.

The intention of the meeting is to gather input and generate ideas to bring to this school year's final Advisory Council meeting and for advanced planning of next school year's approach.

We are not looking to collect volunteers or event leads - although you are more than welcome to raise your hand for these things! We are simply looking for ideas and input to help support and inform the council's planning efforts.

Fun Fair Volunteers Needed

The Fun Fair needs your help!  

We are in desperate need of volunteers. The commitment can be as little as an hour.  We need parents, 8^th grade students, and high school students (we will give documentation for volunteer hours credit) to help run activities on Saturday May 24.  

We are looking for help in most areas still, from the bake sale table to the bouncy castles, ticket sales to the sports equipment sale.  We also need strong bodies for set up (8 to 10 AM) and tear down (3 to 5 PM).

We are also in need of donations for our sports equipment sale.  Please drop off any new or gently used skates, hockey equipment, baseball gloves, cleats, balls, goals, helmets, etc on Thurs, May 22 or Fri, May 23 from 8:15 - 8:45 AM or 3:30 - 4 PM by the main school entrance on Wolverleigh.  You can also drop off donations any time before May 24 at 36 Woodington Ave on the front porch.

One day left to sign up for the ball hockey tournament! May 16^th is the deadline to register your child ($5) or adult team ($100).  Contact James Olejnik at jolejni4@toronto.ca.  Bring your registration form to Earl Beatty Community Centre by May 16^th.

The 3rd Annual Earl Beatty Olympic Auction was a Gold Medal success!

On Saturday February 22 the auction committee packed up and moved into Holy Trinity Church basement on the corner of Monarch Park and Glebeholme. What followed was an evening of fun, excitement as the raffles were drawn, great food and drink and a lot of money raised for our school! 

 

Mr Nore was our distinguished auctioneer for the live auction portion of the evening. Ms Brown organized all the decorations with Earl Beatty students and made our venue look awesome! 

 

Special thanks to our auction committee members: Helen Antonaides, Nancy Lalicon, Marie Bohlender, Claire Vowles, Krista Faddies, Jen Thompson, Caroline Riley, Zenobia Homavazir, Carla Eastwood and Jody Parekh who worked loads of hours and put so much into making this event happen. 

 

The final numbers aren't in yet as we are still receiving payment for last minute auction items but so far we have over $10,500 and counting! 

 

It was a fun evening! Great job Earl Beatty!

Me to We Club Update

At our last Me to We meeting, we discussed the success of our recent We Are Love campaign. In just the first week of sales, we sold our entire stock of 100 buttons! The campaign was such a hit that students crowded the halls as they got in line to purchase their own button. Next, year, we will be sure to meet the demand with a larger order. We successfully raised $200!! This money will go towards medical supplies and health clinics in our adopted village in Haiti. Did you know less than half of Haiti’s children regularly attend school and only 30% of these students make it past the 6^th grade? Or did you know that 50% of Haiti’s residents live on less than $1 a day?

After 12 years of development work in Haiti, Free the Children has established strong social ties to both institutional and community-based partners. Free the Children supports decentralization by ensuring that rural populations have access to essential services and a quality of life.

Me to We students wrote poems to communicate the work we have recently been doing. Here are the three poems the students voted on as their favourites:

Love is colourful,

It's the rainbow of hope,

Together we can.

They were in the dark,

Light came back, hearts were lifted,

Help us let them fly.

Love is golden,

It can warm the coldest days,

With help it will shine.

The Me to We students announce that anyone interested can purchase an ABC Education Rafiki Friend Chain! Every Rafiki Friend Chain sold will provide school supplies for one year for a child living in one of the Free The Children Communities. The ABC Education Rafiki Friend Chain is a 48 inch long, stretchy chain with glass beads. Each piece is unique and handmade by a Maasai mama in Kenya, who earns a fair wage to send her children to school. The ABC Education Rafiki Friend Chains are only $10.00. Anyone interesting in ordering a Rafiki Friend Chain can come see one of the Me to We members, Mrs. David or Ms. Themelis.

Our first night of comedy is sold out! 

Wow, you parents really like to laugh and hate lice. This is great news.

Me to We at Earl Beatty

This year a group of dedicated Grade 6 and 7 students have joined the club Me to We. Me to We, in association with Free the Children, aims to empower youth to create change. By joining Me to We, students have committed to supporting at least one local and one international cause.

International Cause: Sierra Leone

The members of Me to We have chosen to adopt a village in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone has been devastated by years of civil war, and much of the infrastructure including schools, homes, medical and water facilities were destroyed. By adopting a village in Sierra Leone, Free the Children will build schools, train teachers, build hand pumps & water stations, provide water & sanitation education, distribute bed nets etc. Please stay tuned for activities that the students will be initiating to support a village in Sierra Leone.

Local Cause: The Daily Food Bank

This year, the first initiative of our Me to We group will be a local one. The program we are currently running is We Scare Hunger – a food drive supporting the Daily Food Bank that serves some people in our immediate community.

Did you know that 38% of people who use food banks are youth? Or that food bank use has increased by 20% in the past ten years? Did you know that 1 in 5 parents don’t eat to ensure their children have enough to eat?

Students are asked, if they are able, to bring in non-perishable food items (pasta, rice, canned fruit/vegetables, canned soup, baby formula etc). This program will run from October 8^th – November 8^th. Students who bring in at least one non-perishable item will be welcome to participate in hat day (date to be announced).

QSP Magazine Sales!!

Hello Friends of Earl Beatty,
Our QSP campaign is ending soon (Oct 16th) and this Thanksgiving weekend is a perfect opportunity to order magazines for friends and family! As of Oct. 8th over $1,600 in magazines have been sold (by about 20 students)!

 

We still have a long way to go to reach our goal of $16,000 in magazine sales.

Achieving this goal will mean over $5,000 raised for our school. Funds will bring scientists and artists into the school, enhance classroom IT, and so much more!

If you or someone you love would like to see Mr. Carrol dress up as an APE, order today and help us reach our goal!

Magazines can be ordered all year long, but the great prizes are only available on orders made by the 16th. More information is available in the attached flyer.

The QSP magazine fundraiser is returning this fall!

Local Art Raffle for Earl Beatty Classrooms

Local artist, Deanna Hutton, whose children go to Earl Beatty is raffling one of her paintings for a very good cause! All proceeds are being donated to Earl Beatty's grade 6 and grade 8 classes to go towards their end of year trips.  

Tickets are $5 each and are available this Wednesday to Saturday at LucSculpture Studio located at 663 Greenwood Ave. (just north of the Danforth).
The draw will be held at Deanna's art show opening this Saturday, May 25th at 9:15 p.m.

Earl Beatty Fun Fair

This year, the 9th annual Earl Beatty Public School Fun Fair will be held on May 25th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

The event is a partnership between the school, the Earl Beatty Community Centre, and Beatty Buddies Daycare.

 It is a day of family fun including a ball hockey tournament, inflatable games, face painting, kids raffles, a ­­­ barbeque, and a bake sale.  It is our hope that we will build on the success of last year and raise even more funds to help bring much needed resources into our children’s classrooms and playground. 

We hope to see you at this fun-filled day!
