March Break will soon be here.
March 7 is a PA day and then March Break officially arrives March 10-15. That's less that two weeks away!
Pack those bathing suits or snowboards if you are lucky enough to be going away, but bundle up if you are staying close to home. If you are looking for stuff to do around Toronto, check out the Toronto Star's article: 54 things to do during March Break.

Ms. David's Class Discovers Their Trees Are Changing!
This winter, students
made some very interesting observations when they took a look at the classroom
trees.
Tree One
“Some branches are yellow at the end and
the tree is getting bigger”. – Quintin
"It looks
like sticks”. – Carter
“It’s
growing new skin and bark”. – Maddy
Tree Two
“The bark is hard”. – Carter “ The bark is bumpy”. – Ruby
When we
asked the students why trees have bark, Grace F. replied: “To protect the
tree”. We also asked our students what did they think would happen if trees
didn’t have bark. Maddy said: “The trees would fall down”. Lia said “The tree
would be squishy”.
Daniel
extended on the idea of bark and told everyone that inside the tree there’s
sap. He further explained that sap is sticky and we use it to make maple syrup.
Tree Three
“Dandelions
have something sticky inside them, maybe it’s sap”. – Jessica
“The bark
on this tree is smooth”. – Daniel
When we
asked the students why they thought the bark on this tree was smooth and not
bumpy like the other tree, Quintin shared “Because it’s only a baby
tree”.
February Growth
“There’s
lots more red branches this time on our tree. It’s growing more
branches”. – Grace F.

Guest Speaker Visits the EB ECO Club!
The ECO Club had a very special guest speaker visit at
our latest ECO club meeting on Feb. 19th. Our guest speaker, Myrica,
taught us many things about our environment. She spoke about water and
different ways to save water. Myrica also told us some important information
about water treatment systems. We had the chance to taste test different types
of water and also to become mini water testers. Did you know that water can
have different acidity levels?
Myrica had a discussion with our ECO Club about recycling,
reducing, and reusing. She gave us the challenge to sort different materials
into recycling, garbage, compost, and hazardous waste categories.
Myrica, also shared information with us about how items
(like cans) are recycled and the energy required to recycle.
We think the highlight of her presentation was when she
showed us a cockroach and explained their role in composting!
The Earl Beatty Eco Club wants to say a BIG thank you to
Myrica for taking the time to come and visit us. We really learned a lot and
enjoyed her experiments and presentation!!

Me to We Club Update
At our last Me to We meeting, we discussed the success of
our recent We Are Love campaign. In just the first week of sales, we sold our
entire stock of 100 buttons! The campaign was such a hit that students crowded
the halls as they got in line to purchase their own button. Next, year, we will be
sure to meet the demand with a larger order. We successfully raised $200!! This
money will go towards medical supplies and health clinics in our adopted
village in Haiti. Did you know less than half of Haiti’s children regularly
attend school and only 30% of these students make it past the 6th
grade? Or did you know that 50% of Haiti’s residents live on less than $1 a
day?
After 12 years of development work in Haiti, Free the
Children has established strong social ties to both institutional and community-based
partners. Free the Children supports decentralization by ensuring that rural
populations have access to essential services and a quality of life.
Me to We students wrote poems to
communicate the work we have recently been doing. Here are the three
poems the students voted on as their favourites:
Love is colourful,
It's the rainbow of hope,
Together we can.
They were in the dark,
Light came back, hearts were lifted,
Help us let them fly.
Love is golden,
It can warm the coldest days,
With help it will shine.
The Me to We students announce that anyone
interested can purchase an ABC Education Rafiki Friend
Chain! Every Rafiki Friend Chain sold will provide school supplies for one year
for a child living in one of the Free The Children Communities. The ABC Education
Rafiki Friend Chain is a 48 inch long, stretchy chain with glass beads. Each
piece is unique and handmade by a Maasai mama in Kenya, who earns a fair wage
to send her children to school. The ABC Education Rafiki Friend Chains are
only $10.00. Anyone interesting in ordering a Rafiki Friend Chain can come see one
of the Me to We members, Mrs. David or Ms. Themelis.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
