Earl Beatty GSA Success!

A Special Post from Simmy Zaret, EB Teacher:

The Earl Beatty GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) came together back in October, when we set out on a mission to promote a safe, accepting, respectful, positive, and loving environment for our school.  

 
 
In our efforts to spread the word, we decided to create a "WE STAND UP FOR/WE STAND UP AGAINST" wall in our school. Students, staff, parents and guests were asked be photographed while holding up a message, to be included on our wall. Your children's photos are included among the hundreds we received. The response was phenomenal. Our wall, along with our mission statement, sends a powerful message spanning almost the entire length of our main hallway! 

As you may already know, our school will be receiving the GSA Award for our efforts this year.  We are "tickled pink", as we celebrate the positive outcome of our objective.  Our work has only just begun, and we're excited, proud, pumped, and can't wait to continue with our GSA initiative next year.

We hope you've had the chance to come and see our wall.  If you haven't, we hope you'll enjoy the attached photos. There's no doubt together we can all change the world.  Perhaps, in some small way, we already have!

Happy Family Literacy Day

January 27 is Family Literacy Day!

To help with your child's learning success, make sure to spend 15-minutes a day reading or sharing a literacy activity! For great ideas on how to celebrate Family Literacy Day with your family, check out ABC Life Literacy Canada's Website.
 

Wall Mosaic Mural Coming to Earl Beatty!

Earl Beatty will be creating and installing a wall mosaic mural as part of the school art initiative this year.

 

Children in grades 4-8 will be participating in creating this mural with the instruction of a local mosaic Artist Tanya MacFarlane and EBSAC Secretary Claire. 

The Parent Community in invited to submit ideas of themes for the mural (please email   Claire at cvowles74@gmail.com).

 

Once there are a few themes to work with, the children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 will be asked to submit drawings in relation of these themes. Then our Artist will incorporate these drawings and ideas into a final image.

We hope to have a final image by the end of February beginning of March and we will start the mosaic process with the children starting the end of March and throughout April. We hope to have the Mosaic Mural installed by the Fun Fair at the end of May.

Petition for Woodbine Fire Station #224

A Message from Ward 31 Councillor Janet Davis

The 2014 City Budget includes reallocating one pumper truck and crew from Woodbine Fire Station #224 to a new station in Scarborough in March 2014. This would leave only one truck in our local station. Council will be voting on this at the end of the month.
 
I am concerned about what impact this will have on response times and safety in our community.
  
The Woodbine Heights Residents Association has started a petition calling for the City to hire additional staff for the new station, and leave our community with our current level of service. The petition is online.

I will be collecting signatures at the Woodbine Subway Station and other local gathering sites this Saturday and next. If anyone is able to help gather signatures on the petition, please let me know by calling 416-392-4035 or emailing Councillor_Davis@toronto.ca

Because Lice Isn't Funny!

Please join us at Earl Beatty first comedy night fundraiser: Because Lice Isn't Funny. 

Money raised goes to lice checks at the school (and, also, lice really isn't funny).

Date: Thursday, January 23

Time: 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. 

   The comedy show will be from 8 - 10, but come early for a drink or dinner!

Place: Hirut Restaurant, 2050 Danforth Avenue

Tickets: $15 each

There will be some raffle prizes available with tickets sold between 7 - 8. Winners of the prizes will be called between sets.

Hirut has a 42-seat maximum, and the tickets are first come, first served.

Time for a Crossing Guard?

Join the Earl Beatty community in petitioning for a crossing guard for the corner of Woodington and Woverleigh. With increased traffic around the school and the growing student population, it would be great to have this extra safety feature for Earl Beatty P.S..

Here is the procedure to request a crossing guard, as outlined by the School Crossing Guard Coordinator for 54 Division:

Requests for new Crossing Guards must go through the Office of the Chief, and must be made by the person(s) making the request.  As such, the proper course of action would be for any parent(s), to make a request either in writing, or, via e-mail. Simply outline your concerns in as much detail as possible, and that based on these concerns you are requesting that a new Crossing Guard be posted at this specific location.  The Office of the Chief will in turn direct officers from our Traffic Services Unit to conduct a survey of the area near the school.  A recommendation will be made, and the Office of the Chief will have final say.

Me to We at Earl Beatty

This year a group of dedicated Grade 6 and 7 students have joined the club Me to We. Me to We, in association with Free the Children, aims to empower youth to create change. By joining Me to We, students have committed to supporting at least one local and one international cause.

International Cause: Sierra Leone

The members of Me to We have chosen to adopt a village in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone has been devastated by years of civil war, and much of the infrastructure including schools, homes, medical and water facilities were destroyed. By adopting a village in Sierra Leone, Free the Children will build schools, train teachers, build hand pumps & water stations, provide water & sanitation education, distribute bed nets etc. Please stay tuned for activities that the students will be initiating to support a village in Sierra Leone.

Local Cause: The Daily Food Bank

This year, the first initiative of our Me to We group will be a local one. The program we are currently running is We Scare Hunger – a food drive supporting the Daily Food Bank that serves some people in our immediate community.

Did you know that 38% of people who use food banks are youth? Or that food bank use has increased by 20% in the past ten years? Did you know that 1 in 5 parents don’t eat to ensure their children have enough to eat?

Students are asked, if they are able, to bring in non-perishable food items (pasta, rice, canned fruit/vegetables, canned soup, baby formula etc). This program will run from October 8^th – November 8^th. Students who bring in at least one non-perishable item will be welcome to participate in hat day (date to be announced).

From the Me to We Members 

Make Your Voice Heard for Safety!

On Monday mornings, the large City of Toronto front-loader garbage truck arrives at Earl Beatty between 8:30 and 8:45 to empty the garbage bin that is located just outside of the school library. 

To do this, the truck must drive up over the sidewalk and onto the school property right beside the main entrance for the school and the daycare at the busiest time of the day. Students and parents are walking all about and cars are parked on both sides of the street for drop-off. It is dangerous to have such a large vehicle at the school just as the bell goes.

PLEASE make your voice heard and call the City at 311 and ask for the garbage pick up to be rescheduled to a time when students are in class. If enough people advocate for change now we should see a safer school next September!

East York Canada Day Volunteers Needed

Celebrate Canada Day!

The East York Toronto Canada Day Corporation is a non-profit organization that plans and runs a parade from Leaside to Stan Wadlow Park, the fun activities at Stan Wadlow Park, and the Fireworks in the evening on July 1.

It takes lots of volunteers to make this a successful event, so on behalf of the East York Toronto Canada Day Corporation we would like to invite everyone interested to volunteer for the day to help us have an awesome day. Students can earn their volunteer hours by participating in this event.

Join the Community Clean Up on April 20th!

Community Clean Up Day
Saturday, April 20th, 2013

Join Earl Beatty School, Community Centre and Eco-team from 10 am to noon on Saturday, April 20th to help clean up our neighbourhood. Since 2006, this group of dedicated volunteers have scoured the school yard and surrounding area between Coxwell and Glebemount, Milverton and Danforth. We pick up trash, remove posters from utility poles, and sweep up the sidewalks. Since it's spring, we also spruce up our garden - we prune, cut back perennials and rake out the beds in preparation for the new spring growth.

Although the City provides trash bags and some gloves, bring gloves, grocery bags, green waste bags, rakes and pruning shears if you have them. Young children should work with their parent or other caregivers.

Trash bags are put out at the curb on Wolverleigh for pick up the same day.

Our school needs a new logo!
We are asking for submissions from our creative and talented parents by April 19th.

We are creating new t-shirts that will be sold at our Fun Fair, Kindergarten info night, and at various times throughout the school year. Not only will they be ready just in time for summer, but we will also be able to use the t-shirts for school teams and groups, field trips, and all around school spirit! Students, parents, and teachers will have a chance to vote for their favourite design!

1. Please make your design available in JPEG form.
2. Use one colour for the design.
3. "Earl Beatty Public School" must be somewhere on your design.
4. Our school teams are called the "Earl Beatty Bulldogs". This would be great to incorporate into your design so that we can use the shirts for sports teams.
5. Please keep in mind that our students are aged 4 yrs (JK) to 13 yrs (Gr 8) so a design that would be suitable for all ages will be the best.

2nd Annual Enchantment Under the Stairs - An Enchanting Luau

On Feb. 23 Enchantment will be back by popular demand - this time with an Hawaiian flare.  The evening will include a silent auction, food, drink, music, a raffle for West Jet tickets, and a live auction of selected items.

WE NEED YOUR HELP to pull together an awesome auction! 

Experience tells us that if you know the person you are asking, getting amazing donations is much easier. And, experience also tells us if we have 400 people asking for one donation each, we can put together some pretty incredible live and silent auction packages. 

You may think you don't know anyone worth asking, or that its hard. But many places will want to give you a donation, especially if it is a place that you are connected to, or a place that would like to advertise to Earl Beatty parents. 

Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

• Do you work for a telecommunications company, a bank or other large corporation with a corporate box or seasons tickets? 
• Do you know a lawyer who can provide a wills and estate planning package?
• Will your gym or yoga studio donate a membership or package of visits?
• Do you work at one of the local attractions?  Science Centre, ROM, Harbourfront?
• Will your favorite restaurant donate a dinner for two?
• Do you know wine makers or distributors, butchers, chefs?
• Do you have connections to the entertainment, music, or film industry?

Family Skating Party on Feb. 10

Earl Beatty Community Centre Family Skating Party!

Sunday, February 10th, between 2 and 4 pm
At Monarch Park Rink (right beside the pool)

This is the 12th annual SKATING PARTY, and the whole neighbourhood is invited!
Come out with your family to have fun with music, games, and a crazy scarf contest—can your scarf be the most colourful? The longest? The weirdest? Come out and find out and win a prize. Games include spot skates and races for all ages.

The Advisory Council also puts on a great spread - hot chocolate and marshmallows, coffee, and home baked goods. 
Lug-a-mug for a greener event! Children under six must wear a CSA approved helmet.
