Catching up with Earl Beatty's ECO/Green Team: Planting Native Plants at Earl Beatty

Last spring, Earl Beatty students, staff and parents planted several native plants in the schoolyard as part of the ongoing schoolyard naturalization project. This initiative was financially assisted by Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds, which supports local, sustainable greening projects in schoolyards, parks and communities across Canada. Much appreciation and admiration to everyone involved for their hard work that day!

Community Clean-Up, Saturday, April 25th from 1pm to 3pm

On behalf of the Eco Team Greening Committee,
you are invited to help clean up our school
grounds and surrounding community on
Saturday, April 25th, from 1 pm - 3 pm.

"I know we usually have it in the morning since 2003, but, I had to move it to the afternoon so that I could actually attend, as I have a course in the
morning. I promise, it will be back to normal next year. Who knows? Maybe we will like it better in the afternoon because it's warmer - I do recall on rainy days or cold days wearing gloves under our clean-up gloves!

Anyway, I wanted to remind you all that we will be covering the school
grounds and adjacent streets: Coxwell to Woodmount, Danforth to Milverton, providing we have enough people.

We will also be cleaning up the front gardens in preparation for the
planting season, so you can bring your rakes, cutters, green waste bags and the like to help out. The City has provided garbage bags and gloves.

I am planning to bring coffee fixings and drinks for the kids and possibly
some baked goods (or maybe Tim Horton donuts, we will have to see) for our
wonderful volunteers. If you have some spare time to bake, it would be
appreciated by all, I am sure. Remember, no nuts or peanuts, just in case.

I hope that we won't interfere too much with family activities, but I do
hope you all can join in this annual spring ritual.

Thanks in advance,

Liza
clean-up day organizer and clip board holder (for a lack of a better
description)"

EcoTeam Greening Committee Meeting

Click here for the minutes of our planning meeting at Small World Cafe on February 21st.

We are thrilled to share the news that Earl Beatty has been granted $2000 from the Toyota / Evergreen Learning Grounds Fund in support of our plans for the school's front yard landscape improvements. Thanks to all of you who have supported the efforts of the EcoTeam Greening Committee by donating items as well as helping out or coming to shop at the Honest Earl's Bargain Basement sales. In addition to the numerous bags of clothes that we have collectively donated to local shelters and charities, we have raised an additional $270 from the clothing that was sold through Ages and Stages (our local children's clothing consignment store on the Danforth) - bringing the total raised for this project to $4760!

So dig out those gardening gloves and sun hats, because plans are underway for Earl Beatty's spring gardening events! And please remember to save your gently used kid's clothing, footwear and sporting equipment for donation to the spring...
Honest Earl's Bargain Basement Sale:
Date: Sat. April 18th, 2009, 9a.m. -1 p.m.

If you can't hold onto these items until then, Ages and Stages will accept items in season for resale (just mention the Earl Beatty Greening Fund). More news on the sale and planting /gardening events to come in future Thursday folders and school newletters. And did we mention the amazing baked goods and delicious coffee served at the sales (compliments of Small World Cafe)...? Yum... good friends and good food... with 'green' sales and bargains galore... really, what else could you ask for?!

Thanks again,
The Earl Beatty Ecoteam Greening Committee.

December 8th, 2008 Evergreen Foundation Brick Works Ground-Breaking Event

Although the majority of the Beatty Eco-school Team (BEST) were freezing their noses off at the Toronto Island School, five members, Cameron, Hannah, Shaelynn, Laura and Emma braved the cold and snow to attend the Evergreen Brickworks ground-breaking ceremony. Along for the ride, or at least providing the ride, were some of the adult members of the Greening Committee: Tara, Sheila, Kate and Liza.

After a snowy walk around the frozen pond, admiring the snow-covered meadow, the group entered the covered portion of the former brickworks. Much to everyone's delight, the Evergreen Foundation provided organic hot chocolate, coffee, cookies and tomato soup to warm us up. We sat facing the podium where the dignitaries from all levels of government, including our Mayor Miller, expressed their delight in officially opening the Evergreen Brickworks proposed development.

When the speeches concluded, the dignitaries donned their hard hats and planted 5 eastern white pines in the frozen ground. When they were done and the photos were taken, the BEST members tried their hand at planting the trees. They were so good at it, Evergreen Foundation took their photo! You can see it by clicking here: http://www.evergreen.ca/rethinkspace/?cat=21

The plan for the former brickworks includes transforming the existing buildings and building a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly environmental centre where people from across the GTA can come and learn about what they can "do" to be more eco-friendly themselves. This development follows the existing naturalizing of the area and the new organic market that operates in the summer and fall. You can find out more on the evergreen website.
